DESCRIPTION: EPW - William E. Harpur, Philadelphia, lever fusee with free-sprung balance and helical hairspring, 55mm, heavy 18K gold original GP & Bro consular HC, "J.W." initials engraved to front shield, fixed gold cuvette is engraved "Jesse W. Starr, Camden, N.J., 1861," white enamel SS dial, KWKS, fully capped lever escapement, free-sprung balance with gold or gold-plated helical hairspring, diamond endstone, 19-21J, gilt mvt, s#535 with matching serial number to case. Gross weight of assembled watch 98.4 dwt (153.2 g). This attractive high grade free-sprung lever fusee was presumably of English manufacture that was marked for this Philadelphia retailer. Jesse W. Starr of Camden, New Jersey was a partner of the Camden Iron Works, a very successful firm which during the American Civil War supplied munitions for the Union Army.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered small spots and portions of mild haze to plate surfaces, some typical micro-fine scratches; dial with two tightly spaced hls below seconds-register at 5:30 with one being readily visible and the other being quite faint; nearly mint hands; case front lid rubs on latch when closing, case shows medium wear, some short scratches and small nicks to band at 10:30, no dents, reduced engine turning detail with full loss at shoulders and with a portion of loss to upper-central front; tight bow, push shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
